What to do When You Can’t Pay Your Atmos Energy Bill

Atmos Energy currently provides natural gas to more than 1,600 communities in the United States. The communities are spread across 12 states accounting for more than 3 million customers. The company offers various plans to help customers having trouble paying gas bills, including:

  • Sharing the Warmth Program – Donations collected to help elderly customers pay utility bills.
  • Energy Assistance Programs – Available in local areas through state programs.
  • LIHEAP – Available for qualified residents of the state of Missouri.

How to Pay the Bill

At Atmos Energy, customers have various options for paying gas bills, including:

Paying Online – Customers can pay your Atmos Energy bill online at https://www.atmosenergy.com/home/payment/mkPayment.html.

Paying by Phone – Customers can call 1-888-286-6700 to pay by phone. Follow the prompts to pay your current gas bill or talk to customer service for other options.

Paying in Person – Payments are taken at most Atmos Energy locations. Visit https://www.atmosenergy.com/home/payment/payctrs.html to search for local payment centers. Payment centers may charge a service fee for collecting bill payments.

How the Penalty Fees Work

Penalty fees are assessed for late payments, reconnections and returned checks. If your service is disconnected for non-payment, customers must pay the balance of the gas bill, a free to reconnect service, a returned check fee (even if no check was returned according to online customer service), new deposit or increased deposit. Customer service would not comment on fees without a current account.

I Can’t Make a Payment

Atmos Energy offers payment arrangement for customers have trouble paying bills on-time. Customer service must be contacted for payment arrangements at 1-800-286-6700. If a customer breaks a payment arrangement, service will be disconnected and no further payment arrangements will be available. To reconnect service, customers must pay the outstanding balance and all applicable fees. Other options include:

  • Prepaying gas service
  • Budget billing to reduce spikes in gas bills

When we called customer service, the wait time was about 3 minutes. Customer service was pleasant and friendly, but the representative declined to reveal any information, but they did direct us to information about payment arrangements on the Atmos Energy website.

Customers have registered complaints about bad customer service and fast disconnections when payments are not made on-time. According to online customer service, the customer must contact Atmos Energy before payment is due to arrange a payment plan or service can be disconnected.

One of the most used services for customers that can’t pay your bill is LIHEAP. This program offers customers an opportunity to pay your bill with federal funds. One of the most commonly asked questions is how to qualify for energy assistance with LIHEAP. In order to qualify for assistance, you must complete the application. You must also be aware of the qualifying guidelines prior to applying.

  1. I have been laid off from work and having problems paying all of the bill. I have applied for LIHEAP but haven’t heard back yet. Also will make payment on bill today at local office. Thank You DB Hampton

  2. I do not get paid until April 13th-I will pay in full $141.29 that is due on my account through electronic payment. My phone has been shut off so I am having to contact you via email. Please allow me this time so I do not get disconnected.

  3. 200$ a monthfor gas ? really..every month ? no they wont help and i would like an itemized bill how is it legal for a company to just send u a price for their service without a true breakdown of that service?…i asked for an extension they said no i told them i have a small child they said no….. i told them i lost my job..again no ..there is no help for me untill maybe the 4th …

DONT trust them —- turned off service without notifying me for balance due, – they said they mailed a letter but never received on – at least call me – now paid balance and have to wait a full day to have service restored – SERVICE SUCKS – so i go without heat and hot water until tomorrow – they are still in the neighborhood, saw the truck just about 1 huor ago and they cannot come back – RIP OFF!!! just to get a reconnect fee – if the driver is still in my neighborhood – send him back . He could of rang the doorbell before turning it off – the worst customer service and can care less about customers. not even a phone call – no customer courtesy!!

  7. Atmos is greedy and a rip off got notice of disconnect tried paying my bill on line there system crept kicking me out loosing information several days of trying so I would not get cut off. Sent the bill hoping it would get there in time. No such luck came to my house shut off gas stuck a notice on the door and disappeared . Didn’t knock wife was home. They have no respect for customers. Called to get turned back on they want the balance left plus a 55 dollar and there adding 150 dollar deposit fee what a rip off!!!!!! Then your talking to some one in another state say’s oh you past payment history is excellent. Put a deposited on this account 25 years ago they claimed that was returned to me over the years as credit on my account what a joke!!! The lines were busy for quite a while must be all the other customers there ripping off.

  8. I lost the on-line account due information. Can you provide me the amount and the {full account number}. All I have on my bill I received in the mail is a customer number and no acct. number

  9. How do they get by taking payments twice in the same month?? This is the only Utility Company on Credit Card terms. Not even 30 days??? This does suck.

  10. I only received a small check this week I’m asking to please have a little more time until next Thursday Aug 7th to get this bill paid in full. That’s when I will receive a full size check from my job my wife is still unable to work herself due to her broke ankle. this has really hurt us being able to stay on top of our bills.
