What To Do When You Can’t Pay Your Illinois American Water Bill
Illinois American Water is a water company serving the State of Illinois. It is a division of American Water Company, a company that services several states across the country. Since it is difficult to measure water usage without constantly monitoring the meter yourself and water usage is rarely ever the exact same from each billing cycle to the next, budgeting this expense can be hard for many customers.
How To Pay The Bill
Illinois American Water offers many different convenient payment options for customers such as: bank draft, over the phone, online, in person, or via the U.S. Postal Service.
To make your payment automatically from your checking account: Print and sign the form, attach a voided check or savings deposit slip and mail it to:

To make your Illinois American Water bill payment online: Visit MyH2O at: http://amwater.com/MyH2O. You will need an account to access this service. For people who cannot use the MyH20 service, such as commercial customers, you can also visit: https://www2.paymybill.com/water/ to pay your bill.
To make your payment by phone: Dial 1-866-271-5522. Follow the prompts and make sure to have your account number ready. You can pay by using a Visa or Mastercard. There is a convenience fee for using this service. This is not the number to call if you have questions about your bill.
To make your payment in person: Use this payment center locater to find the location nearest you. Do not send payments by mail to these locations.
To make your payment through the mail: Detach the billing slip and return it along with your payment to the address provided, using the envelope included. If you do not have this, you can send the payment to:

How The Penalty Fees Work
- Late payment charge: 1.5% of the past due amount
- Service connection charge: $32 during normal business hours; $138 after hours and on weekends
- Customer activation charge: $10
- Returned payment charge: $15
I Can’t Make A Payment
If you cannot pay your Illinois American Water bill on time, contact customer service at: 1.800.422.2782. They will work out a payment arrangement with you that will require you to pay 25% of your bill within 48 hours after you call. The remainder of the balance must be paid in installments over the course of the next six months, but cannot exceed six months. You must pay all future bills on time under this arrangement. Low income families may qualify for assistance with their bills through the H2O to Help Others program. To find out if you qualify, visit your local Salvation Army branch.
