LIHEAP Application & How to Apply?

The New Jersey Department of Community Affairs works with local community action agencies to accept LIHEAP applications. Residents are encouraged to contact the department at 1-800-510-3102 with any questions pertaining to LIHEAP assistance or the application process.

Applications are accepted during a five-month period from November to April. This includes heating, cooling and crisis applications. After April 30, if you need assistance paying your utility bills for heating or cooling you’ll need to get in touch with your utility company or one of the community action agencies for additional support outside LIHEAP.

LIHEAP Eligibility – Am I Eligible?

You must qualify for LIHEAP based on income. If you earn at or below 200% of the federal poverty line, you may be eligible to receive benefits. Benefits are calculated based on family size, heating or cooling costs and income.

Family Size

200% of Poverty

1

$21,780

2

$29,420

3

$37,060

4

$44,700

5

$52,340

6

$59,980

7

$67,620

8

$75,260

If you have more than eight persons in your home, you can earn more and still qualify for LIHEAP assistance. Add $7,640 to the yearly allowed income for a family of eight for each additional family member. For instance, if there are 10 persons in your household, you would add $15,280 to $75,260 for a maximum allowed income of $90,540.

Just because you are not eligible for LIHEAP does not mean there is no support available. Contact your utility company for information on programs for families who don’t qualify for LIHEAP. Some utility companies offer reduced rates or monthly credits to needy families.
