What to Do When You Can’t Pay Your Novec Bill

Novec, Northern Virginia Electric Cooperative, is an electric company serving a 651 square mile radius around Manassas, Virginia. Nearly 150,000 homes receive electric from Novec. Customers in northern Virginia should be aware that Novec offers several payment options and assistance programs. Customers having trouble making their electric bill payment on-time should contact customer service for immediate help.

How to Pay the Bill

Paying your Novec bill couldn’t be easier. The company offers online and offline solutions for bill payment, but not all payment methods are fast. If your service is due to be disconnected in the near future, it is best to take payment in person to the nearest Novec office.

Pay online: You can pay your Novec bill online at This service is associated with the Novec cooperative, so customers need to register before making payment.

Pay with Speedpay: If you want to make a payment by phone or online without the hassle of talking with a customer service representative or registering for an online account, Speedpay is an option. Speedpay charges $2.45 per transaction. Customers can call 1-866-215-2703 or visit the Speedpay website to pay your Novec bill.

Pay by eCheck: The eCheck service is an automatic billing option available to all Novec customers. You must fill out an authorization form to have payment deducted from your bank account. This service is automatic, so payments will be deducted on the due date each month.

Pay by mail: Customers can choose to send payments by mail. This is the slowest payment option and should not be used if the account is past due or facing disconnection.

How Penalty Fees Work

Novec lists most penalty fees on the official website under the Payment Policies.

  • Late payment fee: Novec will charge 1.5% of the past due amount as a late payment penalty.
  • Returned payments: If your check or bank payment is returned for insufficient funds Novec will charge a $35 fee per instance in addition to the fee you bank may charge.
  • Collection fee: $40 per trip.

I Can’t Make a Payment

  • Operation Round-Up: Customers choose to have energy bills rounded up to the nearest dollar each month. The proceeds are used to help low-income residents pay energy bills during the winter months.
  • Levelized Billing: Evens out monthly bills so you know what to expect each month. Bills are typically higher than average during the spring and fall and lower than average during the summer and winter.
  • LIHEAP: The LIHEAP home energy assistance program allows Novec customers to apply for federal support for energy bills. You must use your Novec services to heat or cool your home to qualify.

    I moved into the house I rent and on day I was to move in Novec took the meter off the landlords house
    Electric bill was in his name and paid
    They did it cause I refused to given social security number over cell phone to set up service
    They have taken more than two months electric bills in security deposit
    My bill was late once in over 2 1/2 years cause I was sick
    They did not even try to call before shutting off electric
    I am 100% disabled
    The requested amount due plus amount due for next bill in advance on top of keeping my $300 as security deposit to turn electric back on
    They refused to do it the day they turned it off and it ruined everything in fridge freezer being off over 24 hours
    It was 30 degrees outside with no heat I had to go spend night at friends house
    They are down right abusive for no reason
    If I owe less than the security deposit your holding oft money for over 2 1/2 years you have no right Novec to shut off my electric
    This company also in 2003 when my husband walked out refused to put bill in my name again asking for $300 security deposit I had perfect credit zero debit
    I refused they forced me to pay electric bill in my husbands name from
    2003 to 2007 when he did not live in home
    And I had paid electric bill out of my account from 1996 to 2003
    Abusive ways of treating customers
    Right down to their $15 service fee for having Novec
    To them thinking they can violate their own rules and keep more than two months bills in security deposits
    They have been cutting down trees on 12 acres I live on
    Making a mess screaming and yelling outside working in a location that is quiet and peaceful
    Even methods they use to cut down healthy trees makes trees cut down useless to be used for anything besides fire wood
    They have a total disrespect for others property and money
    Even tried to dig a hole in middle of field to put up a new pole
    We’re told no filled in hole
    They have no right to bee all over 20 acres of private land doing what ever they want because they planned poorly putting up electrical poles and lines cutting down forest trees
    Ruining property values
    I have had Domion power never one problem with them
    Novec problems from
    1996 to 2012
    They think cause you have no choice which electric company you have
    They can do anything
    Even the office looks like bank of Novec bullet proof glass
    They refuse to let you talk to supervisor in person make people go in tiny room
    Talk on phone inside the building
    Lady in front of me had electric turned off cause they thought she was dead
    She had to prove she was alive
    More proof they are abusive company
