Cant Pay Your Water Bill On Time?
Act right away if you are having trouble paying your water bill
In most situations, water is the most crucial necessity of life. You can live without electricity if you have to – perhaps not comfortably, but it can be done – but having your water cut off is another story. That's why you should act immediately if you find that you can't pay your water bill. Don't panic. We are here to help with information from water companies all over the country in the icantpaymybill.com archives.
Lenient to an exent - Most water companies will be sympathetic up to a point. They will extend your due date, and even let you slide for a month or more. Cutting people off is the last thing on their agenda, but realistically, they cannot provide free water forever. Eventually, you will have to pay it, and if you anticipate a long term financial setback, sooner is probably better.
As soon as you decide you're not going to have the money to pay your water bill, call customer service. Find out if they will offer an extension, explain how your income has changed and get them to change the bill due date if possible, to come due on a date when you receive the bulk of your income, for example, on the day unemployment checks come. If you're short now, but will be able to pay later in the month or even into the next month, there is a very good chance your water company will work with you. You should also ask them about assistance programs. Many utilities ask customers for small donations each month to maintain a fund to help others in need. Understand, however, that tis type of aid is usually limited to one bill per month per household. There is usually far more need than there is money to go around. You can also look for charitable aid through churches and other charity organizations.
In the meantime, you need to consider reducing your bill. Find out what the average water bill is in your area and figure out ways to conserve water. Here are some tips:
- Repair leaks and drips...a drippy faucet or a running toilet costs only a few dollars to fix and can double your water bill if left unrepaired.
- Stop watering your grass and washing your car. If you must water your grass, do it sparingly and early in the morning, before 10 AM.
- Take short showers instead of baths. Showers use less than half the water needed to fill a tub.
- Unless you have a low-flow toilet, lower the amount of water needed for each flush by displacing some of the water in the tank. A quart-sized container, filled with water and sealed, works fine.
